The new K-Series OZ from Lighthouse introduces the next generation of audio
switching. OZ is a connectivity device similar in function to a traditional routing
switcher, except that it does not have a crosspoint matrix. Instead, it uses a
DSP/TDM high speed addressing engine in its processing core. The OZ switching
system is the solution to one of the biggest problems of this decade, the
digital/analog dilemma. It is I/O module independent. There are analog I/O
modules, and digital I/O modules (AES/EBU, MADI, future AC3, Dolby E, Firewire,
Fibre Channel, whatever). They are all connected to and from the DSP core where they
can all be switched (the digital is synchronous, too) with any input (analog or digital)
to any output (analog or digital). Unused channel bandwidth can also be used for time
code and RS-485/422/232 switching when the appropriate optional I/O modules installed in
a system. Current "OZ" Cards available are:
- Time Division Multiplex (TDM) Module
- Analog I/O Modules
- AES I/O Modules
- Time Code I/O Modules
- RS422 Machine Control Modules
- Local Satellite Module
- Remote Satellite Module
- MADI 56 I/O Module
- MADI 112 I/O Module
Other advantages of OZ are the many functions not possible in a matrix switcher,
functions that use the power of the DSP core. Functions such as:
- Quiet “quick mix” audio switching
- A stereo input can be mixed to a mono signal then sent to one channel of a
stereo output with time code on the other channel of the stereo output, plus
many other mix capabilities
- Assigning any switcher inputs to the 2 channels in the AES outputs
- Creating and analyzing audio test signals, time code, and RS-485/422
- Gain adjustments
- Fiber Optic I/O
- Satellite I/O that can move inputs and outputs to distant locations
